The New Day Weighs In On A Possible Conor McGregor Debut, Britain and Ireland to the Rescue

It's been a lengthy discussion in sports as to whether or not fans would get the chance to see Conor McGregor enter a WWE ring. Well, it's safe to say those speculations are here to stay, at least for the moment.

Wrestlemania 33 host and 2x Tag Team Champions The New Day were on TMZ Sports where they touch on an array of topics, including a possible debut of Conor McGregor within the square circle.

Check out the video below:

Britain and Ireland to the Rescue

Since the 1980s, there have always been a handful of British and Irish wrestlers who have

made their names in WWE. Fast forward to 2017 and the company now has a UK

Championship and a growing band of stars from across the pond and more could be on their

way.

A recent tag match on ‘205 Live’ saw three out of four wrestlers coming from the UK.

Neville as the newly crowned WWE Cruiserweight champion, Noam Dar from Scotland and

‘Gentleman’ Jack Gallagher, complete with umbrella and a haircut from another century. We

even have a feud between Neville (how the former Pac accepted that name is beyond me, he

doesn't even support Manchester United) and Gallagher over the Cruiserweight title.

Paige has already had championship success and NXT has Nikki Cross, who will surely win

the Women’s title sometime in the future and the enormous Killian Dain who will become

your typical WWE monster. Throw in William Regal and Nigel McGuinness in NXT,

trainers such as Johnny Saint and Robbie Brookside and the presence of Irish wrestlers such

as Becky Lynch, Sheamus and Finn Balor (all of whom have held WWE titles) and you can

see the impact that British and Irish wrestlers are having in WWE.

This year has already seen the WWE hold their first ever UK title tournament. An interesting

event that was great to watch but had a rather puzzling roster. No disrespect to those who

took part but there are plenty more wrestlers who could have taken part.

The British wrestling scene will never reach the high levels it did in the days of World of

Sport. Back in the 1960s and 70s there were as many as 20 shows being held around the

country every night. After a massive depression when pro wrestling was kicked off ITV, the

British wrestling scene has slowly recovered and as in the past is again producing high-

quality performers.

Yet the WWE UK title tournament crowned 19-year-old Tyler Bate. It lacked established

wrestlers such as: El Ligero, Zack Sabre Jr (who took part in last year’s Cruiserweight

tournament), Sha Samuels, Rampage Brown, Dave Mastiff, Marty Scurll and Will Ospreay.

Throw in Drew Galloway, Rockstar Spud and Grado and there is plenty more talent that

could be making their mark on WWE.

There’s another area in which WWE can get help from the British and Irish contingent. The

current WrestleMania plans aren’t exactly setting the world alight but what if a certain Irish

UFC champion was to make an appearance?

Conor McGregor has two UFC titles to defend and a whole range of possible opponents. If

you believe he’s going to take on Nate Diaz, then 888sport gives you odds of 2/5 on him

winning. But what if he was to head to WrestleMania, particularly if the rumoured bout with

Floyd Mayweather doesn’t take place?

Due a British/Irish invasion is the WWE Hall of Fame The past thirty years have seen stars

such as Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid (The British Bulldogs), Lord Alfred Hayes,

Layla Finlay and of course William Regal. Yet none have so far been inducted into the WWE

for a variety of reasons. Recently there has been a campaign aimed at seeing Davey Boy

Smith posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Professional wrestling has such a varied history and many of those inducted into the Hall of

Fame have been wrestlers as far back as the 1950s. With the sudden interest, how about

inducting such legends as Johnny Saint, Giant Haystacks, Mark Rocco, Kendo Nagasaki or

Bill Robinson? Several of them, particularly Rocco and Robinson, have wrestled for the

company at some time in the distant past.

The chances are that William Regal will be inducted sometime soon, perhaps some of the

British and Irish wrestlers currently on the roster are destined for the Hall of Fame one day

and others yet to join the company as the invasion
