During a recent edition of The PWTorch Livecast, ex-WWE writer Kevin Eck revealed to host Wade Keller that back in 2012, plans had been set in motion to turn John Cena heel. He said that most importantly was the fact that WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon had agreed to those plans.
Eck stated that even though Cena's planned heel turn would indeed happen, and although the final plans to make the turn itself happen were still being worked out, McMahon changed his mind at the last minute for two different reasons. The first reason was due to fear of Cena's heel turn not being successful, and the second reason involved McMahon not wanting to risk losing Cena's huge merchandise deal that he had at the time.
Eck also stated that if Cena's planned heel turn had been successful, then Sheamus would have been "highly considered" to be WWE's top face instead of either Randy Orton or CM Punk.
